Burundi President Pierre Corneza has died of a heart attack after his condition deteriorated last week while he was at a stadium watching a volleyball match.
A government spokesman said the president's death was caused by a heart attack, but international media linked his death to the coronavirus.
His wife contracted the coronavirus a few days ago and is still being treated in hospital.
Despite warnings from the World Health Organization (WHO), Pierre Corneza held general elections in the country during the Corona epidemic and expelled WHO representatives from Burundi. Burundi's new president will be sworn in in August.
