The construction of a road on the Nepal border by India has sparked a new dispute between the two countries. Nepal has warned the Indian government to refrain from doing any work within its borders.
Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh yesterday inaugurated a road near the disputed Border Line of Actual Control, which connects Dhar Chola in Uttarakhand with Lipu Lekh near the Chinese border.
The southern part of the Lipu Lake is a disputed area between Kalpani India and Nepal, while it is a strategically important three-way junction with China and Tibet.
Nepal's foreign ministry said in a statement that India's unilateral move was against an agreement reached between the two prime ministers, which agreed to resolve border disputes through negotiations.
He said that New Delhi should refrain from any kind of activities within the borders of Nepal, a separate statement issued by the ruling party of Nepal in Kathmandu termed the construction of this road as a threat to Nepal's sovereignty.
On the other hand, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs has taken the position that the road has been built on Indian soil with the aim of providing convenience to the pilgrims.
India is committed to resolving all border disputes with Nepal through dialogue.
It should be noted that according to the 1816 agreement between Nepal and British India, the river Makhali flowing between the Kalpani area will be considered as the border between the two countries.
Nepal's position is that the Makhali River does not start from Kalpani but from Lekh Pass.
The controversy erupted last year after India released a new map showing the Kalpani area as part of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.
Demonstrations were also held outside the Indian embassy in Kathmandu on Saturday against the construction of a road in the disputed area.
