Afghan government releases more Taliban prisoners Web Desk 30 April 2020

KABUL: The Afghan government has released 40 more Taliban prisoners.

According to details, Taliban spokesman Sohail Shaheen while confirming the release of the prisoners said that today the Kabul administration has released 40 prisoners in Kunduz.

The spokesman said the Taliban were trying to secure early release of prisoners during the Karuna epidemic. International analysts with a keen eye on the Afghan war have praised the Afghan government's move.

He hoped the strategy would help bring the Afghan leadership and the Taliban to the negotiating table. However, there are differences between the parties on a number of important issues, which is why the talks are not moving forward.

'New hope for peace in Afghanistan'

It is believed that on April 13, Afghan forces released hundreds of Taliban prisoners from Bagram under an agreement, while the release of the remaining prisoners is underway.

A spokesman for the Afghan Security Council said the Afghan Taliban would continue to release prisoners. So far, 361 prisoners have been released from Bagram prison, and 1,500 will be released under a peace deal.

It should be noted that on February 29, a historic agreement was reached between the United States and the Afghan Taliban for peace and stability, which includes the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan and the release of Taliban prisoners.
