India: Man arrested for killing elephant (news update)

A man involved in the killing of an elephant in the southern Indian state of Kerala has been arrested while two others are being sought.


The head of Kerala's forest department told AFP that the accused had confessed that he had used cracker-filled coconuts to keep wildlife, especially wild boars, away from his land.

The incident came to light when a forest minister shared a post on social media about the tragic death of an elephant.

According to AFP, the accused P. Wilson works as a laborer in a rubber plantation in Kerala and has confessed to filling explosives in coconuts to target wild animals.

Forest chief Surendra Kumar said the search for P Wilson's two other accomplices involved in the incident was on.

According to Surendra Kumar, the accused had planted several 'coconut bombs' around the plantation in the second week of May.

Wise officials say it is not clear when the 15-year-old elephant ate the coconut but was found injured on May 25, two days after he died.

The elephant was unable to eat or drink as the explosives exploded in its mouth.

On social media and in other circles, people demanded strict action on the tragic death of the elephant.

The wild elephant left the Silent Valley of Kerala in search of food and went to a nearby village.

Social media users, including Indian celebrities, had also expressed regret over the incident and various hashtags were being used to comment on the incident.

It is common in India to stockpile explosives in fruits to prevent animals from destroying crops.
